Police say a robbery suspect who escaped Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers has been located in the Bronx and taken into custody.
Police say Geraldo Rojas was caught after approximately 29 hours of “intensive search efforts" by Yonkers police and task force officers assigned to the FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force.
“The apprehension of this felon speaks to the great Police work and collaboration among our Yonkers Police Detective Division and FBI,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano in a statement.
Rojas was wanted for multiple robbery charges and had been arrested Friday. He was brought to the hospital for a medical evaluation before his court appearance.
Despite being arraigned at the hospital and placed under the custody of the Westchester County Department of Corrections on Saturday afternoon, Rojas had not been medically released.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, he successfully eluded the county corrections officers and hospital staff, prompting St. Joseph's to go into lockdown.
Following the incident, the corrections officers responsible for Rojas' custody were suspended and are facing disciplinary action.
