Tens of thousands of people honored a spiritual and community leader in Ramapo on Wednesday. 

Rabbi Chaim Zanvil Abromowitz was a revered figure among Jewish people. The spiritual leader was from the former Soviet Russia and fled during WWII before ultimately settling in Monsey. 

"He was someone who people went to for guidance, for blessings and people would say they saw miracles. If he would bless someone to have success with something, things would turn upside down and new realities would emerge. So, when it's the anniversary of his passing, people want to come and pay their respects,” said community member Yossi Gestetner.

Abromowitz died in 1995. Since his death, thousands have made their way to memorial services each year.

The Town of Ramapo says it typically sees between about 30,000 to 40,000 people annually.

Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht says the town has it down to a routine by now.

"It’s gone on at least 10 or 12 years. It happens every year and our police are prepared for it,” he said.

Due to the high volume of people attending the event, the annual memorial service caused traffic problems in the area of Route 306 and Brick Church Road.
