This month marks the 19th annual March for Meals at Meals on Wheels.

The campaign is designed to raise awareness about food insecurity.

The demand for food at Meals on Wheels in Rockland County remains double what it was before the pandemic began. The surge sits around at a 75-100% increase statewide.

Officials tell News 12 it's all connected to COVID-19.

Rockland County has the second highest percentage of positive cases in the state - at 6.3%

County Executive Ed Day assisted in delivering meals Monday as he continues to advocate for a mass vaccination site in Rockland.

"No. 1 in fatalities outside of New York City. The numbers demand it. The facts demand it. We want the governor to do the right thing," says Day.

A mass vaccination site could administer 15,000 doses a week. Over the weekend 10 more state-run mass vaccination sites opened, including one at SUNY Orange in Middletown and another at Ulster Fairgrounds in New Paltz.

Rockland is hoping it is next in line.

"What it gives us is an opportunity to attack the virus. This is a battle. The governor is very famous for saying if we see something pop up we're gonna hit it. You're not hitting it governor," says Day.

Meals on Wheels in Rockland is also looking for more volunteers.
