The sentencing for a Hudson Valley priest who pleaded guilty to grand larceny was postponed in Orange County Court on Tuesday for the second time.
An attorney for Fr. William Damroth says the priest is suffering from kidney failure and is on dialysis while on a transplant list.
Damroth is facing jailtime and probation for stealing $300,000 from St. Theresa’s Parish while he served there as priest in 2023. Prosecutors previously said they would recommend six months in jail and five years of probation.
His attorney says Damroth paid back the stolen funds in full as part of court-ordered restitution and can’t receive the level of medical care he needs to survive in jail.
Orange County Court judge Craig Brown said jailtime is necessary due to the amount stolen. He asked for medical records and agreed to adjourn the case until April 29.
