Residents of a housing complex in Melrose are calling on city officials to address their trash collection problems, which they say have been plaguing St. Mary's Park Houses for months.
Tenants at 665 Westchester Ave. say garbage from the compactors ends up in the basement and is dragged out to the front of their building, where it remains for days without being picked up.
"I've been here for 12 years, and it keeps getting worse," says Cynara Rivera.
Neighbors say the piles of trash serve as a breeding ground for rats and spread noxious smells that make it impossible to open a window.
