Police have now identified the man fatally hit by a Coach USA bus in Orange County.
Middletown police say 67-year-old Rickey Melvin was struck Monday, shortly before 6 a.m., while he tried to cross busy Route 211.
They say Melvin was reportedly homeless, stayed in various locations in Middletown and had difficulty walking, which was evident on gas station surveillance video given to News 12, that captured the moments both before and during the accident.
A relative says he was living with family.
Police say Melvin’s disability and the dark-colored clothing he was wearing contributed to the crash.
The unnamed driver was the only person on board the bus, according to police. They say the commuter vehicle had a working dash-cam and that the driver is not currently charged with any wrongdoing.
The investigation is ongoing.
News 12 reached out to Coach USA for comment but has not received a response.
