Middletown pools are in danger of not opening this summer.
Mayor Joe Destefano says it's because the town is dealing with a lifeguard shortage. Right now, there are only seven lifeguards hired when they need 20.
Only one of its three pools, Davidge Park, is open.
Destefano says the pandemic prevented others from getting certified. "It's too bad for the kids but that's the reality. We can't open pools without safety and lifeguards. I know communities across the country are suffering the same way."
Destefano says the city is still hoping to hire lifeguards before the end of the season and is willing to pay for applicants to get certified.
