Even more New Yorkers will become eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine starting Wednesday.

The next group of COVID-19 vaccine eligibility adds government and public employees as well as nonprofit workers.

This includes jobs like public works employees, social service caseworkers, DMV workers, and building service personnel.

The state is calling these workers "the everyday heroes who have been showing up day in and day out throughout this pandemic."

The governor credited an increase in vaccines from the federal government for being able to expand eligibility but warns the rollout may be slow because the state demand still outweighs the supply.

Karen Pecora, the president of CSEA Unit 9200, is relieved her 3,000 employees can soon get their shot.

"They do have to meet with the public, and while it's no guarantee, but it is a piece of mind for them that they feel a little bit safer in doing their jobs," says Pecora.

Changes are coming to the distribution process as well. Any vaccination sites besides pharmacies can now give shots to any eligible New Yorker starting Wednesday.

Pharmacies will continue to serve people 60 years old and up and teachers.
