Thousands of confidential documents containing names, Social Security numbers and addresses were discovered inside an unlocked basement storage space in Suffern after a mortgage company moved out.
The Community Acceptance Mortgage Company transferred its office out of a Lafayette Avenue building early last year. Locksmith Paul Costakis wanted to take over the downstairs storage space, and when he went to inspect it, he discovered the files.
"Addresses, names and everything that you would need to steal identity, and it just upsets me," Costakis says. "I don't know how any company, let alone a mortgage company, could be so irresponsible."
It is unknown whether Community Acceptance employees intentionally left the documents or simply forgot them when they moved to their new office in Mahwah, N.J.
In November, the mortgage company had been apparently evicted from its new location for failing to pay rent, again leaving behind piles of documents.
"It?s very unprofessional the way they left everybody's personal info," says Jim Davidek, who found the files in Mahwah.
News 12 Hudson Valley attempted to contact the mortgage company, but calls to Community Acceptance have not been returned.
Following the discovery of the documents, Costakis has secured the door of the storage room on Lafayette Avenue.
