Jomo Belfor, a Mount Vernon firefighter and youth basketball coach, has issued an apology for assaulting a referee at a basketball game in Pennsylvania last month.

Belfor, 41, was charged with assault after becoming angry over one of the referee's calls and physically attacking him.

In a statement, Belfor acknowledged that his actions were unacceptable and took full responsibility for them. He also recognized his role as a coach and firefighter, stating that he must serve as a role model for young people and that his behavior failed to meet that responsibility.

Belfor is due back in court next month to face the charges.
