An old Mount Vernon firehouse that was shut down after a private engineer hired by the city deemed the building was unsafe has been partially reopened.

Mount Vernon Fire Station 4 was built when fire departments were still horse-and-buggy operations. Fire officials say that the firehouse was shut down after a private engineer found cracks in the concrete floor, making for a foundation that could be especially unstable, particularly with fire trucks inside.

Firefighters from Station 4 were moved to nearby Station 3, less than half a mile away. Now, some of the fire trucks and firefighters have been moved back into Station 4, however it appears they are only using one side of the decrepit Oak Street station.

Fire officials say they are hoping to snag some emergency funding to get the repairs done quickly.
