MTA officials are expected to hold a board meeting Thursday to discuss sweeping budget cuts that could leave Bronx straphangers paying more for less.

Faced with a budget deficit that surpasses $1 billion, the MTA is considering a series of drastic cost-cutting steps. Some of those steps include slashing the Z and W subway lines from service and getting rid of the weekend express bus service on the X27 and X28 lines. Several stops along the G and M lines could also be eliminated.

If the proposed measures are passed, riders could expect longer wait times and trains that will be 25 percent more crowded than in the past.

In addition to service cuts, the MTA is considering a 25 cent fare increase, which may go into effect in July.

The MTA must agree on a budget by December.
