MTA police offer drivers safety tips at crossings
MTA police were out on International Railroad Crossing Awareness Day at seven crossings throughout the region to give drivers safety tips.
Four months ago, six people died in Valhalla after a Metro-North train slammed into an SUV at a busy railroad crossing. Ellen Brody drove her SUV onto the tracks and got stuck, resulting in a deadly collision. The crash killed Brody and five passengers on the train.
Police are telling drivers that the only safe place to cross is at a designated crossing, and to never try to beat a train because trains move faster than they appear. They also add that it takes a train a long distance to come to a stop.
Drivers should also never go around crossing gates. They should only proceed to cross if they can completely clear the crossing.
The MTA officers also issued summonses or written warnings if safety violations were observed.
