It doesn't appear the MTA is wasting any time in improving the safety of transit workers after two recent fatal accidents.A report in The New York Times says the transit workers' union has created a 60-page curriculum that will be the backbone of a safety refresher course. The goal of the course will be to emphasize a "no short cuts" strategy for the future. The course will reportedly include guidelines for workers moving and working around tracks, rules for using warning lamps and reminders about basic policies.The paper reports that investigators have found two main factors that have contributed to 81 fatal accidents since 1940. One cause, according to the paper, was failing to have proper warning signs on tracks and the other is lenient enforcement of safety rules.
