The Village of Nyack has replaced single parking meters with muni-meters, leaving some drivers confused.
The village installed the new meters downtown in January. The so-called muni-meters take coins, bills and even credit cards. The machine prints out a receipt, which drivers then have to place on their windshield.
Although the new system eliminates the need to feed a meter, some drivers complain that they didn't see the single muni-meter and thought parking was free. "We went out to dinner for her birthday and she pulled into a parking spot on Broadway and didn't realize the meter was taken away," says Brian Mahoney. "[We] came outside and there was a ticket."
Mayor John Shields says judges are showing some leniency, citing the learning curve. He plans to have white lines designating parking spaces removed and to post more signs.
