Republican Nan Hayworth conceded to incumbent Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney Wednesday, saying victory does not look likely.
Previously, less than 2,000 votes separated the two candidates. By Wednesday morning, Maloney's lead had expanded to at least 3,000, with 7,000 paper ballots left to be counted.
On her Facebook page, Hayworth said that Maloney's lead was insurmountable. "At this moment, even allowing for our likely majority of the absentee ballots, we don't see a path to victory."
The 18th Congressional District includes all or parts of Dutchess, Putnam, Orange and Westchester counties. Hayworth represented the district in Congress until she was unseated by Maloney in 2012.
