A Nassau police officer was released from hospital after spending 29 days in Intensive Care Unit.

Nassau Police Officer Michael Hyland was on his department motorcycle, assisting a funeral procession, when he was struck by a Toyota Tundra, authorities said.

It happened in Lindenhurst on October 6.

His injuries were severe.

Dr. James Vosswinkel, chief of trauma at Stony Brook University Hospital, said Officer Hyland was “broken head to toe.”

His many injuries included blood around his brain, a broken shoulder and punctured lung, the doctor said.

“He separated his spine from his skull,” Dr. Vosswinkel told reporters.

Officer Hyland, a father of two teenagers, held his fist in the air as he was wheeled out of the hospital on a stretcher.

He said “thank you” several times. He is headed to in-patient rehabilitation, where he will undergo physical and occupational therapy, Dr. Vosswinkel said.

There have been no charges in connection with the accident.
