Hicksville Public Schools posted a reminder on their Facebook page about a new policy in the Code of Conduct about e-bikes and e-scooters.

As of Jan. 21, the Board of Education adopted a policy that prohibits students from riding e-bikes or e-scooters to school. The post says these devices are banned from all school property, including parking lots, walkways and fence lines.

The district also wrote that schools are unable to store or secure these vehicles.

Hicksville school officials declined News 12's request for an interview. The policy was discussed at the Board of Education meeting on Jan. 22, where district officials said, "it's not legal to be able to store them and to do those kinds of things because of the actual electric battery."

The school district also wrote that Nassau police could confiscate any e-bikes or e-scooters found on school property. Students who violate the policy may face disciplinary action.

As News 12 has reported, officials across Long Island have been warning about the dangers of these vehicles and say kids must be over the age of 16 to operate them.

"They can get home quicker, the way I look at it," says Hicksville resident and parent Cameron Bradley. "I think kids still deserve the opportunity to have transportation to get around and get to where they need to be."

"I see young kids, definitely under 16, riding e-scooters and they don't obey any traffic laws," says resident James Southard.
