In observance of National Black Business Month, News 12 is shining a spotlight on Black-owned enterprises throughout the Hudson Valley for the duration of August.
Dr. Mitzann Edmond, founder of Elevation Dental Studio in Mount Vernon, aspires for young boys and girls of similar backgrounds to follow in her professional footsteps.
"Seeing dentists of color, individuals who resemble me, is quite uncommon," Dr. Edmond expressed.
"As a dentist and a person of color, I take immense pride in my achievements and in establishing a business. While it wasn't necessarily a lifelong aspiration, I recognized its necessity in assisting others to liberate themselves from being under the guidance of someone else. Instead, they can pursue their own aspirations."
"Growing up with limited representation of people of color motivated me to step out and strive to become the person capable of providing care to those who share my background,” says Edmond.
The significance of dental care is frequently emphasized, but Dr. Edmond explains its importance further.
"Dental care is incredibly vital because we serve as the primary defense against issues occurring in the head and neck. Our examinations extend beyond teeth and gums, encompassing oral cancer, head and neck conditions, and TMJ problems. Oral health isn't isolated; it's intertwined with overall well-being. Smoking, for instance, can impact dental implants, and gum disease can have implications for heart health. Thus, staying vigilant is crucial,” says Edmond.
Dr. Edmond says that Elevation Dental Studio stands apart due to their dedication to cultivating relationships with every individual who enters our doors. They aren't solely focused on profit or swift patient turnover and their aim is to establish lasting connections, provide optimal care, and ensure the well-being of our patients.
Addressing aspiring young individuals, especially those interested in healthcare, dentistry, or similar fields, Dr. Edmond offered encouragement.
"I urge any young person seeking to tread the path I've walked—entering healthcare, becoming a dentist—to pursue their goals. It's absolutely achievable,” says Edmond.
"With guidance, passion, and a clear vision, support and funding become available. Witnessing individuals who resemble us is essential, and through our actions, we can make a meaningful impact."
