Nearly 20 JROTC campers under the age of 18 were taken to area hospitals in Orange County Wednesday afternoon after a charter bus transporting them from an upstate camp to New Jersey lost air conditioning, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Management.

Emergency dispatches indicated that the children on board the bus were passing out and vomiting because of the extreme heat. County officials said about 17 to 20 campers onboard the DC Luxury Coach bus ultimately suffered heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Officials said the mechanical issue caused temperatures inside the bus to rise. The bus pulled over on Scotchtown Avenue in Goshen, and campers were transported by ambulance to Garnet Health Medical Center, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and St. Anthony Community Hospital for precautionary evaluation.

It's unclear where the campers are from.

Officials said the second bus continued to its original destination in New Jersey with the remaining campers. A Triple D Travel charter bus was also seen leaving the scene.

News 12 has reached out to the bus companies involved for comment and is waiting to hear back.
