A new law to protect abused children in the Bronx was signed by the Governor on Friday. Governor Pataki (R-NY) signed a bill into law that authorizes confidential investigations into the deaths of children who have been transferred into a state care agency or have been the subject of a child abuse accusation. The law also requires Bronx child protective agencies to notify the police when they hear any report of suspected child abuse. In the wake of several other high-profile abuse cases the city has been working to revamp its child protection services. The city hopes to establish better communications between the Administration for Children?s Services and local schools. Officials say by working together they can track down children with excessive absences, which is a sign of child abuse.
