The doors at the United Community Center in New Rochelle are shut, and staff tell News 12 they don’t know when they’ll be able to reopen.

Thursday night’s heavy rain caused water to pour through leaks in the building on North Avenue, resulting in serious damage.

Electricity and heat have been shut off, making the building “off limits” until repairs can be completed.

The nonprofit organization serves hundreds of people in the area, including at-risk children, families in need, survivors of domestic violence, and seniors.

They offer a variety of services, but staff say they’re most concerned about their food pantry—especially with some residents at risk of losing SNAP benefits this weekend.

Ana Hercules, the development officer for the center, told News 12:

“People are going to show up and the doors are going to be closed, so we're just trying to figure out how exactly we're going to move forward right now.”

Hercules says they are working to reopen as quickly as possible.
