Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed a new bill into law in New York, aimed at bolstering protections for doctors prescribing abortion medication.

This legislative action follows a high-profile case where a New Paltz doctor was charged in Louisiana for mailing an abortion pill.

“A doctor replied to a call for help – and in return, she faces up to five years in prison and fines up to $50,000. After today, that will no longer happen. I am about to sign another bill into law. Going forward when another doctor prescribes another FDA-approved drug like Mifepristone to terminate a pregnancy – they’re simply going to have the name of the health care company on the label, rather than the name of the provider."

This new law ensures that doctors' names will not appear on prescription labels for abortion medications, reducing the risk of being targeted by out-of-state legal actions.

The legislation was co-sponsored by state Sen. Shelley Mayer (D-37).
