A controversial councilman in the city of Newburgh who previously made headlines for anti-police behavior and remarks has been arrested.

State police say 65-year-old Omari Shakur was arrested last Thursday when he refused to give identification and said to troopers, "F--- you, arrest me," during a traffic stop.

Shakur's anti-police behavior made headlines last February when he refused to cooperate and cursed at police during another traffic stop, and again in March when he was criticized for inciting near-riots in the city.

Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey had no comment about the arrest.

Shakur did not return News 12's calls for comment but posted on Facebook urging people to attend Monday night's council meeting to discuss what he says is the "oppressive state police force" in the city.
