Authorities are investigating a second fatal shooting in less than two weeks in the city of Newburgh.
This time, the gunshot victim was found dead after overturning their car overnight.
Police say the driver was shot on the corner of South Lander Street and Benkard Avenue Monday around 1:30 a.m.
So far, they aren’t releasing any identifying information about the victim other than that they’re from Newburgh.
It’s not clear where they were trying to go, but it appears their injuries became too severe and they lost control of their car.
Authorities say the person was found unconscious and unresponsive about a mile away from the nearest hospital on Liberty Street and was shot in the right side of their back.
Neighbors wonder when and how the violence will end after a year of near-daily shootings in the crime-plagued city.
“People’s families are being ripped from them for God knows whatever reason,” said James Lopez. “We have to stop killing our people.”
Last month, a 29-year-old father and city of Newburgh resident was killed in the city’s first homicide of the year in a shooting outside of his apartment.
Police are looking for the gunman in both cases.
Police are anyone with information about the homicides to call them at 845-569-7509.
