A Newburgh school district parent has been charged in an attack on her son’s bus driver in a violent incident that allegedly unfolded in front of a busload of frightened kids.

City of Newburgh officials say 35-year-old Geneva Herring was arrested this month after she repeatedly punched a West Point Tours driver in the face on Jan. 10 while trying to board the school bus.

Authorities say Herring tried to get on board to confront a student who was allegedly involved in an incident with her son, when the female driver tried to get her off the bus.

Several West Point Tours staff members have reached out to News 12 about the incident and say the bus was full of Temple Hill Academy middle schoolers when the driver was allegedly beaten at a bus stop. They say the incident was caught on bus surveillance video and allege Herring’s son is heard on the recording pleading for his mother to stop.

Authorities say the incident happened at the corner of First and Dubois streets around 3:30 p.m.

Herring is charged with assault and harassment.

The Newburgh Enlarged School District says it is aware of the allegations and is investigating.

Herring’s attorney, Christopher Berger, declined to comment.

Officials say the bus driver suffered a laceration to the head.
