An Orange County property owner says his garage was demolished during a job he never ordered or paid for.
The property on West Parmenter Street in Newburgh was destroyed when a neighboring landlord allegedly paid Richard's Rubbish Removal for his own garage to be demolished but the company took down the wrong one.
"The rubbish removal company assumed that this was the property that they were taking down," said Brandin Knight, of Newburgh. "I had a lock on the gate. They ended up cutting the lock to gain access to the property."
Not only is the owner out his building, but there were also thousands of dollars in car parts and tools inside. He says efforts to hold anyone accountable have gotten nowhere.
"I'm not asking for more than I had, just what was there," says Knight.
News 12 called the company but the person who answered avoided questions.
Knight says the landlord next door hasn't taken responsibility, either.
News 12 looked up the property through county records online and contacted the owner – but he also hung up.
Knight says he reached out to police and the Building Department for help but that nothing has been done, leaving the owner with a problem he didn't create and no idea where to turn.
News 12 reached out to city of Newburgh officials for comment but hasn't heard back.
