The Newburgh School Board has approved a $65,000 contract with a public relations firm to help improve the district's image.

The decision came during a meeting Tuesday night, with the acting superintendent saying the firm will promote positive stories, increase enrollment, and review district practices.

The move follows months of turmoil, including the firing of two superintendents, a forensic audit, and allegations of financial issues.

Reactions from taxpayers were mixed. One parent said, "$65,000 that could go directly to our classrooms… that could pay for teachers… buy textbooks, pencils, paper, tissues… resources our students actually need."

Another said, "I think a PR team would help other kids and inspire other kids when they see their stories when it looks glossy and it looks nice and fresh on social media."

The district says the funding comes from its already approved $379 million budget.
