The mayor of an Orange County city is under fire for his role in a rap video that critics say glorifies gangs and gun violence.
The viral rap video in Newburgh promotes cash, drugs, gangs and guns - in a city once ranked among the most dangerous nationwide.
Officials are trying to crack down on illegal firearms in Newburgh, which is why Mayor Torrance Harvey's cameo now has the city's top official under fire.
"He's seen smiling and shaking hands with everybody and did nothing to remedy the situation," says City of Newburgh Police Detective Mike Loscerbo.
Loscerbo says the teens and young adults in the video belong to one of the most violent groups in the city.
News 12 reached out to Mayor Harvey, who's also a schoolteacher in the district.
He said he was there in an official capacity after getting reports of a large crowd blocking downtown traffic.
But critics – like Loscerbo – don't believe that and say Harvey's involvement was not only unprofessional but goes against real efforts to crack down on crime.
The mayor declined to be interviewed.
Harvey said he never authorized his image to be used, and is considering speaking with an attorney.
Mayor Harvey was among those who spoke out against illegal guns in January at the start of a city and county initiative – offering cash incentives for tips.
News 12 reached out to the Newburgh City Council and Orange County District Attorney's Office for comment but hasn't heard back.
