The Mount Vernon community is paying tribute to one of its most iconic residents – singer, songwriter and civil rights activist Nina Simone.
The city celebrated her life and legacy with a commemorative street naming ceremony. The honorary street sign is located on the historic corner of East Fifth Street and Number Avenue – where the Simone family once called home.
Simone's brother Sam Waymon held back tears as he accepted the honor on her behalf.
In addition to the street naming, city and county officials honored Simone with various proclamations. An exclusive tour of her home was also offered to certain guests.
