Beachgoers in Westchester County may have to change their plans after health officials closed nine beaches following heavy weekend rainfall.
The closures were ordered after nearly 2 inches of rain on Saturday, which can increase bacteria levels in local waterways.
According to the Westchester County Department of Health, excessive rainfall can wash contaminants into swimming areas through stormwater runoff and drainage systems.
Officials say those conditions can create elevated bacteria levels that may cause illness.
