North Rockland School Superintendent Ileana Eckert presented Tuesday her $194 million budget proposal under which dozens of teachers may be laid off.
Ekcert says she may be forced to eliminate 33 teaching and five civil service positions in order to balance next year's budget hurt by drastic cuts to education funding.
"It's very personal for me because I do live in the community and I'm firing people I grew up with," she says.
Besides layoffs, the school district may be forced to increase class sizes and cut extracurricular activities.
The school board will vote on the proposed budget April 20. It will be up for public vote in May.
