NY AG Letitia James leads bipartisan coalition calling for Meta to address increase in account takeovers

New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading a bipartisan coalition demanding that Meta address the rise in scammers taking over Facebook and Instagram accounts.

James’ office says it has seen a 1,000% increase in account takeover complaints between 2019 and 2023. The office received 128 complaints in January alone.

James and 41 other attorneys general sent a letter calling on the company to review its security practices for protecting accounts.

The coalition suggests increasing the staff that responds to the complaints.
