The new state comptroller is speaking out against a plan to raise tolls on the New York State Thruway.
The toll hike would impact commuters from Rockland and Westchester counties who use the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo bridge.
The New York State Thruway Authority has proposed a multiyear schedule of system wide toll increases, to begin in 2024.
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the toll increases should be the last option.
A new comptroller report found that the Thruway needs to re-evaluate its finances before bumping up costs for drivers.
Dinapoli called out issues with the system-wide cashless tolling, revenue numbers, clarity on how the money will be spent, the Thruway's current debt and the use of federal and state funds.
He also says the Thruway Authority needs to maximize non-toll revenue sources, including federal funding.
