Get ready for some changes at two tunnels in New York. The MTA is prepping for storms, and it might affect any late-night travel plans you have.

The MTA announced that they will be testing their massive flood doors at the Hugh L. Carey and Queens Midtown tunnels. These tests are part of their preparations for possible hurricanes or tropical storms.

It is hurricane season from June 1 to Nov. 30 and officials say the greatest potential for hurricanes in New York City occurs between August and October.

To ensure everything is working correctly, the agency said it needs to close one tube of the tunnel during the tests. One lane will stay open in each direction in the other tube.

The flood doors weigh about 20-plus tons and are 14 feet high. They were installed back in 2017 as part of the city’s flood mitigation program. They were designed to stop water from getting into the tunnels and causing extensive damage, like what happened in 2012 after Superstorm Sandy.

Here are the dates and times you need to know for both tunnels. The tests are taking place late at night and during the early morning hours from July 19 to August 4.
