A new Rockland County resident is bringing their infamous past with him.
Robert Chambers, 56, known as the “Preppy Killer,” is now living at a halfway house in Hillcrest, according to Ramapo police.
Chambers made headlines for the 1986 strangling of Jennifer Levin, 18, in Central Park.
He pleaded guilty to manslaughter, served 15 years in prison and was paroled in 2003.
In 2008, he was back in prison on drug and assault charges.
New York’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision says Chambers was released from the Shawangunk Correctional Facility on July 25. They say he fulfilled criteria for the “limited credit allowance” that takes six months off the minimum sentence.
Chambers’ parole will end on July 25, 2028.
Rockland's Department of Social Services commissioner said they had no discussion with DOCCs, adding, “We are not the district of financial responsibility and therefore no benefits are being paid by this administration for his housing or any other support in this county."
There are 13 conditions to his release, including that he cannot leave the state without permission, can’t possess drugs of guns, must listen to his parole officer and must not break any laws.
News 12 has filed a FOIL request to see if there are any special parole conditions for Chambers.
