Officials: Man who crashed into police to evade capture arrested in Newburgh
Town of Newburgh Police have arrested a man who they say was caught stealing from Home Depot, tried evading police and crashed his car nearby.
Authorities say the suspect, later identified as Clarence Hulzenga, 48, from Highland, was spotted on July 10 by security personnel who alerted police. They say Hulzenga was seen running from the store into a pick up truck parked in the parking lot.
Police attempted to box in the suspect to prevent him from leaving when they say he struck two police vehicles and drove over parking lot medians to escape. Authorities say he lost control of his truck on an access road behind Adam’s Fairacre Farms and crashed into a fence.
Hulzenga was subsequently apprehended after a brief foot pursuit, according to police. He’s charged with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, obstruction of governmental administration, unlawful fleeing from police, petit larceny, criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Police say he also had an active arrest warrant for felony burglary.
Hulzenga is being held in Orange County Jail on $23,000 bail.
