The Town of Ramapo says a private school has remained open without running water after its pipes burst.
Trailers make up the Blima Ruchel Girls School in Ramapo. More than 300 girls, from kindergarten through eighth grade, go to the school. Officials are looking to temporarily shut the school down until things are fixed.
After the pipes burst, officials say the school was getting water from a garden hose from a house that was transformed into offices for the school. That hose has since been disconnected.
Town officials say the students may be without water for weeks.
A Ramapo fire inspector also found a slew of safety violations inside the school, including missing floor tiles, blocked exits and overcrowding conditions.
Town officials are urging people to evacuate the building, but they say school is still in session.
"If they vacate on their own and they cease the activity, that solves that problem," says Town Supervisor Michael Specht. "But if they don't, which they haven't as of now, we go to the Supreme Court to issue an order to have the court shut them down."
Specht says that is not something the town wants to do, but says officials will, for the safety of the children.
The Health Department is also conducting inspections at the school. They says the school is currently making the necessary repairs.
