Orange County health officials have halted distributing the Johnson and Johnson vaccine after giving out nearly 7,000 shots.

It comes after the CDC and FDA recommended a pause on use of the J&J shot as authorities investigate rare blood clots reported in six people who received the shot.

The county says that out of 6,900 J&J vaccines administered, no one has reported any adverse effects.

Dozens of J&J vaccines not yet used will not be administered during the pause.

And providers countywide are being issued alerts to keep track of any effects patients may be reporting following their Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and anything that may be an early indicator of a problem.

"Should this be on our radar? Absolutely, because for providers it's important to have it on our radar to note any type of thrombotic event, especially in women since all six cases reported have been in females and females of childbearing age 18 to 48. But once the actual findings are out there and we learn more, we can truly gauge whether or not this is a real cause for concern for the overwhelming population," says Orange County Health Commissioner Dr. Irina Gelman.

Orange County is continuing its vaccination program with Moderna and Pfizer options.

Health officials there say they have about 45 J&J doses left, which will not be used at this time.
