Health officials in Orange County say countywide infections have spiked 51% since Thanksgiving.
The county has been averaging 260 new cases a day for the last week.
Officials are urging everyone over the age of 2 years old to wear a mask indoors and practice other safety precautions.
"Clearly the numbers are going up. We are seeing cases of transmission. So, it is prudent for every resident to ensure they are protecting themselves and others by wearing a mask, by making sure they are vaccinated in a timely fashion and of course that businesses are practicing proper safety measures," says Orange County Health Commissioner Irina Gelman.
Orange County has a 62% vaccination rate.
It says that despite the health alert, it doesn't have the manpower to enforce the state's mask mandate.
