Police in Orange County are stepping up patrols to keep residents safe this Fourth of July weekend.
Officials are asking people to take precautions when boating, driving or using fireworks – especially when drinking or using recreational marijuana.
They stressed the importance of summer safety at a news conference today in Monroe.
"Law enforcement throughout this county have stepped up patrols in order to try to intercept tragedy before it occurs, so don't bring tragedy to your family. Don't bring it to other families. Make a responsible choice for you," says Orange County Undersheriff Ken Jones.
Officials say this week's drowning in the Delaware River and Wappinger Creek underscore the message to be safe while having fun.
