The owner of a Westchester animal rescue who is under renewed criticism since a News 12 report last week has now been charged with grand larceny.

Officials say Recycled Paws Rescue owner Lisa Marie Birdsall used $17,000 in donations and adoption fees to pay for personal expenses.

The Mohegan Lake nonprofit owner was arrested Tuesday after officials say they received an anonymous tip with proof.

News 12 reported on the rescue last week and in 2016, after multiple reports that Birdsall was adopting out and fostering out critically sick puppies with Parvo.

"During this investigation, this was the first time we really knew that it was a prosecutable offense. We have documents. As soon as you have a line of money trail you can't cover, there's nothing to do," says Westchester Director of Humane Law Enforcement Ernest Lungaro.

Westchester SPCA officials say they've received multiple complaints for years against Recycled Paws, but have been unable to file animal cruelty charges so far.

News 12 tried to reach out to Birdsall for comment, but the phone number on the Recycled Paws Facebook page is now disconnected.
