A strike of stagehands has shut down many of the shows running on Broadway at one of its busiest seasons.

The union representing the striking workers, Local One, is fighting with management over work rules and staffing requirements. The union members have been working without a contract since July.

Productions canceled by the work stoppage include popular shows like "Wicked," "Phantom of the Opera" and "Rent." Several shows with separate contracts with Local One are still running despite the strike.

There have been no indicators as to how long the stoppage will last. The most recent strike occurred in 2003 and lasted four days, costing New York City millions of dollars.
