A Piscataway woman was killed Thursday morning after being rear‑ended by a vehicle that triggered a chain‑reaction crash on I‑80, leading to three other injuries.

The crash happened at about 8:08 a.m. at mile marker 34.5 in Wharton, according to the New Jersey State Police. Investigators determined that a Subaru SUV operated by 39‑year‑old Tisha Hutchinson of Piscataway was heading westbound on I‑80 when it was struck from behind by an Audi SUV.

The initial impact caused Hutchinson’s Subaru to veer into a guardrail. The Audi continued forward, striking a Pontiac passenger vehicle, which then hit a Chevrolet SUV.

Police say as a result of the crash, Hutchinson sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the Audi, as well as two juvenile passengers, were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. State police describe their injuries as “moderate.”

The crash led to lane closures as police and other first responders worked to clear the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
