Yonkers police are searching for a suspect who shot two men in a car Wednesday night, leaving one dead.
The shooting happened on Morris Street around 8:20 p.m., just hours before the start of Gun Violence Awareness Month.
Police say a 19-year-old was fatally shot in the chest and an 18-year-old ended up in the hospital.
Operation SNUG, which operates through the Yonkers YMCA, is also out on the streets. "What our team does is, literally, one-on-one coaching with youth that may be involved in gang activity, that may have a propensity to pick up a gun to resolve conflict, and that coaching is the core of what we do," says Yonkers YMCA president Lucria Ortiz. "Hey, I've gone through this. Let me tell you how it turned out for me. There's another way of life, let me help you by looking at work, education, training. Sometimes, for people involved in gang life, they don't see that path because nobody's opened it to them."
