Police: 55-year-old man struck by van in Monsey taken to hospital unresponsive

A Ford Sprinter van struck a man on Forshay Road in Monsey Tuesday morning, temporarily closing a portion of the roadway to traffic, police say.
The incident happened around 8:30 a.m.
Ramapo police say the victim, an unidentified 55-year-old, suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital unresponsive.
Ramapo police closed off the road from Lodi Lane to Crabapple Court for several hours until early afternoon during their probe. Investigators were seen walking behind police tape and marking several sections of pavement with spray paint, including near a black baseball cap.
The white Ford Sprinter van that police say was involved was seen parked in a nearby lot with a cracked windshield.
The accident drew multiple onlookers, some as they walked by and others from nearby homes.
The incident is the fourth pedestrian crash in Monsey in 2025. The others involved children, two of whom died as result of their injuries. Police said in 2024 that at least 19 pedestrians, who were all children, were struck by vehicles.
“Any high populated area, there’s a lot more people on the road,” says Monsey pedestrian Mickey Cohen. A question to ask is, are roads built to handle this infrastructure when they did this 50 years ago? I don’t think so.”
Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht provided News 12 data that shows pedestrian-vehicle crashes are on the rise in town. He says the town is currently considering multiple safety enhancements that are under review by engineering consultants and has started the Safe Streets Ramapo Comprehensive Safety Action Plan – a 5-part plan to improve safety through pedestrian and motorist education, safer speed limits, safer roads and post-crash care.
In Tuesday’s crash, authorities say the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The severity of the victim’s injuries is not yet known.
