An 8-year-old boy was pronounced dead just feet from where a school bus struck him on Monday evening.

Town of Ramapo Police officials said the incident happened outside of a school at the intersection of Clinton Lane and Stern Street in the village of New Square.

"The driver was still on scene and is cooperating with the police at this time. It's currently under investigation by the Accident Reconstruction Team," Town of Ramapo Police Department Lt. Blaine Howell said.

Neighbors said buses routinely go around the loop by the school to pick up kids for dismissal.

The victim was a student at the school where the incident happened, according to first responders on the scene..

First responders add that the boy was on his way home at the time of the incident and seemed to have accidentally stepped in front of the bus.

Investigators were photographing the scene and collecting evidence in and around the bus for hours.
