Police say two men were arrested in Yonkers after they refused to leave Our Lady of Rosary Church when Sunday Mass ended. The New York Archdiocese is closing the church as part of a realignment plan. Parishioners did not take the closure lightly. Dozens stood vigil in their pews to protest. Theresa Frank wept openly, while many others said it was impossible to describe how they feel. Some say they are angry that the archdiocese never explained why their church was chosen for closure. Our Lady of Rosary is one of many churches in Westchester and the Hudson Valley scheduled to shut down because of low attendance, the archdiocese says. In general, they say the Catholic population is shifting in the area and low attendance necessitates changes. The two men who were arrested are being charged with trespassing.
