Clarkstown police say a man wanted for assaulting his girlfriend Monday at the Tappan Zee Hotel was taken into custody following a police pursuit that ended in a crash.

Police say Todd Humphrey, 46, of Stony Point, was spotted by state police around 1:30 p.m. in Putnam County. That's when a pursuit ensued.

They say Humphrey eventually crashed on I-84 on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in Newburgh, halting traffic in both directions for hours.

According to police, Humphrey and another driver sustained minor injuries.

The felony complaint states Humphrey hit the woman in the head with a mini sledgehammer while she showered in Room 159.  He then allegedly dragged her into the living room and continued to hit her with a different sledgehammer.

The victim suffered facial lacerations and contusions, as well as a broken left wrist and hand.

The woman was able to escape the room and got help from hotel staff.

Police say the woman had lacerations to her head and was recovering in the hospital.

Humphrey is facing attempted murder, assault and weapon charges. 

On Monday night, a Clarkstown judge ordered Humphrey to get a psychiatric evaluation before remanding him to Rockland County Jail where he is being held.

News 12 has learned that his bail was set at $1 million. 

Humphrey is expected to be back in town court Friday morning in New City. The Rockland DA's Office tells News 12 that it will be bringing this case before a grand jury.
