Seymour Avenue residents were evacuated from their homes Tuesday morning after a hand grenade was discovered in front of a halfway house.
A man who lives at the house says he was leaving his home at around 7:30 a.m. when he saw an object resembling a grenade on his front steps. At first he says he thought it was a toy, but after picking it up and realizing it was heavy, he called 911.
A bomb squad and emergency crews quickly arrived on the scene and evacuated all the residents living in nearby houses. The suspicious object, which turned out to be a live grenade, police say, was taken to a controlled area and safely detonated.
"I'm extremely nervous," says neighbor Jeneba Tucker. "I know a lot of people are trying to downplay it a little bit, but you never know."
The man who discovered the grenade was taken to the local police precinct, where investigators took a DNA sample from him.
